At St John Bosco Catholic Primary School Engadine, we promote a sense of belonging and inclusion. To empower students to be responsible citizens for the future, we provide many opportunities for students to have an active voice within the school and greater community. Along with our formal leadership positions, we also provide programs such as buddies and an environmental stewardship group.
There are many leadership positions made available to students with a particular focus on Catholic Social Teaching and the Preferential Option for the Poor. Formal student leadership bodies at St John Bosco are:
- School Captains (two students) and Vice Captains (two students)
- Sport Team Captains (two students per House Team)
- Year 6 Mini–Vinnies Leaders (Year 6 students)
- Student Representative Council (Years 3–6 )
- Pope Francis Participants (Year 6 – Leadership through service)
The students meet regularly and together plan and action initiatives that can make a difference to the community. One such initiative is our annual Salesian Outreach Service (SOS) Day. The SOS Day is organised and run by the students and focuses on an identified area of need in the community. The day operates like a mini-fete and students take overall ownership.
Student voice at St John Bosco empowers students to have a say and be at the centre of the decision-making process in many aspects of our community. From the selection of whole school rewards for positive playground behaviour to evaluating and re-envisaging creative playground options, students are at the forefront. Embodying our motto ‘Serve the Lord with Joy,’ students also play an imperative role in the selection and implementation of social justice initiatives.
